Olive was awarded the most improved player on both her volleyball and basketball teams this season. Different coaches, different sports, yet the same award, highlighted one of her most valuable traits,

coachability’

For multiple seasons I’ve listened to Olive explain techniques and tricks that her many great coaches have shared for her to improve different aspects of performance.

A common theme has been watching Olive fervently try to implement these suggestions, trusting the leadership of experts.

As a teacher and coach, I know how rare it is to have a pupil actively implement suggestions and tutelage as provided. These few ‘gems’ who arrive with a beginner’s mindset, out pace their peers, as a result of effort over raw talent.

Above all, working with coachable people can differentiate between a rewarding or frustrating mentorship experience.

Coachability, while rare, is a skill that can be learned and improved.

It is not too late to become the world’s greatest learner.

Abdicate your ego, adopt a beginner’s mindset, and trust your mentor.

Your growth trajectory will be the ultimate award.
