Back to the basics

I took a picture of the resources I used during a numeracy and literacy intervention teaching job I just completed. It showed the wide range tools and methods that I implemented when working with small groups of students.

Though it was nice to show how diligent I was by using a variety of strategies and practices, it was clear that, as in all avenues of life, it is most effective to focus on the basics:

• Listen like they are the centre of your universe.

• Make it fun and have a laugh.

• Build rapport and relationships…

• Till they are comfortable enough to make mistakes, and allow new learning to occur.

As with all things in life, it is essential to stick to the basics and don’t overthink it.

• Now that’s a peak ethos.
